Computer Hardware Engineers

Additional Information

Duties

This is what computer hardware engineers normally do:

  • Make plans for the construction of new computers by drawing out drawings of the equipment.
  • Ensure that the computer hardware they create has been thoroughly tested.
  • Examine and change your design based on test findings.
  • Incorporate new software compatibility features into the hardware you already have.
  • Manage the production of computer hardware.

There are a lot of hardware engineers out there who build gadgets for connecting to the Internet and incorporating CPUs and other computer components into produced items. The Internet-ready computer systems incorporated into many contemporary automobiles, household appliances, and medical gadgets are just a few examples.

Software compatibility is the responsibility of computer hardware engineers. As a result, hardware engineers and software developers frequently collaborate. Gadgets such as mobile phones and other handheld electronic devices commonly have both hardware and software developed concurrently.

Education

At the beginning of one's career in computer hardware engineering, bachelor's degrees in computer engineering or a similar subject are often required. Engineering programs approved by professional associations like ABET may be preferred by employers when looking for new hires. Students interested in pursuing a degree in computer or electrical engineering should have a strong foundation in mathematics and science before applying.

Hardware engineers are required to have some knowledge of computer programming since they frequently interact with computer software systems. Computer science classes can provide this grounding.

Master's degrees in computer engineering may be necessary for some high-level positions in major corporations or in highly specialized industries. Master's degrees in business administration are obtained by certain experienced engineers (MBA). To stay up with the rapid advancements in technology, all engineers must continue their education throughout their careers.

Internships are a common way for college students to obtain real-world experience while still in the classroom.

Advancement

Computer and information systems administrators can be made from within the ranks of computer hardware engineers.

Characteristics of Critical Importance

Analytical abilities.  When it comes to designing digital circuits in hardware, engineers employ computer programming tools.

The ability to use critical thinking. Engineers utilize logic and reasoning to explain objectives, investigate assumptions, and assess the strengths and weaknesses of possible solutions.

Possessing the ability to work through issues. Complex challenges in computer hardware are studied by computers hardware engineers who then create and analyze alternative solutions before deciding on the optimal implementation strategy.

Skills in verbal and nonverbal communication. When working in a team, engineers must be able to communicate effectively with each other and with non-technical team members.

Pay

The median annual wage for computer hardware engineers was $155,020 in May 2024. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $85,430, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $223,820.

Job Projections

Employment of computer hardware engineers is projected to grow 7 percent from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations.
